Hillclimb / Racing Experience

After doing the odd Club event with the Lotus Driver’s Club at Wellesbourne more years ago than I care to remember or admit to, I started hill climbing with a Lotus Elan +2 (the family car which we still own).  I then progressed to the Ian Walker Race Elan, now in the possession of and raced by Martin Stretton.

I have raced the 20/22 for around 9 years or so and love driving a single-seater.

About The Driver

I have been a Lotus fanatic almost from the cradle. After gaining much experience I started Paul Matty Sports Cars in 1976 and am still crazy about Lotus cars after all these years.

This will be our 25th season of the Paul Matty Sportscars Lotus Championship.  When I formed it all those years ago, I never imagined it would have lasted so long, or evolved into what it is today.  I am very proud of the Championship and the great bunch of people who take part in it.  There have been some great friendships formed which, had it not been for the Championship, would probably never have happened.

Hillclimb / Racing Experience

Started hill climbing at the tender age of 40 after competing in the odd track day, Club sprints etc. and formed the Lotus Championship the very next year.   I have been competing in the Lotus 35 F2 for a few years now, and still enjoy it immensely.  No major changes again for this season, still chasing a sub-31 seconds at Shelsley.  Ah, maybe one day!  More competition this year in the form of Malcom Thorne’s 35.  Let the battle commence!

About The Car:

Model Lotus Type 35 F2
Year 1965

Description

The only Lotus 35 fitted with a Lotus twin cam engine, the car was found in a derelict state in a museum in Germany by James Hunt (sadly, not THE James Hunt).  The irony of it was he popped in to see me and asked if I wanted to buy it, but I declined.

He sold it to a man who took it to Peter Denty for restoration.  After it was fully restored, the man drove the car a couple of times then put it up for sale.  It was purchased by a friend of mine and after 12 months he sold it to me.

About The Car:

Model Lotus Elise
Year 1999
Engine Size 1796
Description

Bought in 2013, it’s pretty much a standard S1 Elise.  It started out grey but then I crashed it where Uncle John said that I shouldn’t, so I mended it and resprayed it white with a burgundy stripe.  There’s a rear spoiler like you’d find on an Elise Sport 160 and it has slightly poncy two-tone alloys that I painted with some £5 rattle cans.  It’s a pretty car on the outside but still a complete shed on the inside – the seats are more threadbare than a tramp’s underpants.  The engine internals are as they were when they left the factory and are still going strong after 104,000 miles (a testament to Rover K-Series reliability!!), but there’s a fancy 4-2-1 exhaust manifold and larger bore backbox bolted onto it.  It’s got slightly newer Bilstein dampers from an S2 Elise and I’ve fitted some brake discs (AP) and pads (Carbon Lorraine) that actually stop the car.  Jon Dobson and Pete Bottrill can confirm that the spark plugs are in good working order, as of May 2015.  There’s a sticker with an image of the Hindu god, Ganesh on the side of the car (for good luck) and the stereo has stopped working.  I can’t work out why so it’s just acting as ballast.

Previous Cars

Started out with a 1985 1.2L Vauxhall Nova (the ugly one with the enormous boot).  Graduated to a mighty 1.4L Peugeot with 75bhp before assuming the Lotus position in 2001 with an S2 Elise.  Current fleet includes a 1999 S1 Lotus Elise, a 2000 Lotus 340R and a couple of practical German runabouts.

About The Driver

I have been competing in hill climbs since 1999, first of all in the Lotus Elan which I bought from Harry Metcalfe of “EVO” magazine fame.  I then sold the Elan and bought my Lotus 69.  I have won the Paul Matty Sportscars Lotus Championship outright twice in the Elan and managed to win on scratch three times in the 69.  I changed the 1600 BDD engine (which was originally built by Nicholson McLaren) for a 2 litre BDG in 2011.  For 2012 I replaced the CWP in the gearbox.  There are no modifications planned for 2017.  The car has already scored some class records and is one of the quickest in the current group.

About The Car:

Model Lotus 69 F2 “Atlantic”
Year 1970
Engine Size 2000
Description

The Lotus 69 was a works car built for Peter Wardle in 1970 and raced for 2 years in the “Yellow Pages” Atlantic series.  It was then sold to South Africa and again raced in the Atlantic series.  It was restored in 1999 then returned to the UK in 2000 and raced in the Historic F2 class.  The designer, Dave Baldwin used square tube for the chassis which proved to be stiffer and stronger than the conventional round tube.

Description

UUK 700G (Eric) was orignally registered in Wolverhampton in October 1968 (I don’t know whether it was kit built) and changed hands many, many times in the 70s, so much that the original log book was filled and renewed in the 70s.  The car gradually drifted South and ended up in Bristol in the early 80s.  It was allegedly rebuilt in the early – mid 80s by “an engineer” working at the Lotus factory (Paul still maintains that looks like a Lotus fix, and with lots of sound-deadening stuck everywhere there’s nothing to suggest this is true).  Certainly since I bought the car from Paul in 1987 I’ve only managed to lose, replace or simply break any original parts the car once had.  I daren’t weigh it.

The bits I’ve lost are mainly small screws and trim items, mainly bits of carpet and sound-deadening that were once properly stuck down but now aren’t.
